Archival Overview
Numidian prince, grandson of Masinissa, whose assassination on the streets of Rome by Jugurtha's agents caused Roman fury and triggered the Jugurthine War.
Biographical Record
Massiva was the son of Prince Gulussa and grandson of the great Numidian King Masinissa. During the violent dynastic civil war that erupted following Micipsa's death, Massiva fled to Rome under the protection of Consul Spurius Postumius Albinus, petitioning the Roman Senate for the Numidian crown.
Recognizing the grave political danger Massiva posed, King Jugurtha dispatched his trusted agent Bomilcar to eliminate him. Massiva was murdered on the streets of Rome in 110 BCE, precipitating Jugurtha's expulsion from Italy and his famous departing words: 'A city for sale and doomed to quick destruction, if it should find a buyer!'
