Archival Overview
King of Western Numidia based at Siga, who allied with King Juba I and the Pompeians to defend Berber sovereignty against Julius Caesar.
Biographical Record
Massinissa II was a prince of the royal Numidian dynasty who ruled Western Numidia with his capital at the ancient maritime city of Siga (near modern Oulhaça El Gheraba and Aïn Témouchent). Governing the fertile plains and coastal trade routes between the Moulouya and the Chélif rivers, he maintained strong cavalry forces and promoted civic trade.
During the Roman Civil War, Massinissa II entered into a firm alliance with King Juba I and Pompeian forces to resist the imperial ambitions of Julius Caesar. In 46 BC, while Massinissa II and Juba were campaigning in eastern Numidia, Caesar's ally Publius Sittius invaded his western territories, leading to the collapse of his realm and his valiant death defending his homeland.
