Archival Overview
Celebrated Canadian realist painter whose hyper-detailed canvases of domestic life—jars of red jelly, cracked eggs, and fish on foil—revealed the transcendent eroticism of light.
Biographical Record
Mary Frances Pratt was one of Canada's most beloved visual artists. Born in New Brunswick and educated at Mount Allison University under Alex Colville and Lawren P. Harris, Pratt settled in rural Salmonier, Newfoundland, raising four children with her husband Christopher Pratt while painting quietly in the kitchen.
Working from 35mm photographic slides, Pratt captured fleeting moments of light striking everyday kitchen items: glowing preserves in jars, bleeding pomegranate seeds, and iridescent trout skin. Her luminous realism uncovered emotional undercurrents beneath domestic rituals, earning her the Molson Prize and Companion of the Order of Canada.
