"If we can do it in the Kentucky mountains without roads, it can be done anywhere in the world."

Archival Overview

Visionary founder of the Frontier Nursing Service who brought modern nurse-midwifery on horseback to remote Appalachian communities, drastically reducing infant mortality.

Biographical Record

Mary Breckinridge was born into a prominent political family and suffered the heartbreaking loss of both of her young children, which led her to dedicate her life to children's healthcare. She studied certified midwifery in London and observed rural health systems in post-WWI France.

In 1925, Breckinridge founded the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS) in rural Leslie County, Kentucky. Her nurse-midwives traveled on horseback across rugged mountain trails through blizzards and floods, delivering over 17,000 babies with maternal mortality rates far below the national average.
