Biographical Record
Marwan Abdel Karim Issa was born in the Bureij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip to a family displaced from Ashkelon during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. A promising basketball player for the Bureij youth club, he joined Hamas during the First Intifada in 1987 and was imprisoned by Israel for five years.
Issa rose through the ranks of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades to become the right-hand man of commander Mohammed Deif. Known as "The Shadow Man" (Abu al-Baraa) due to his secrecy and rare public appearances, Issa modernized Hamas's military wing into a structured army with subterranean tunnel networks, rocket arsenals, and commando units. He played a key operational role in the 2011 Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange and was identified by Israeli and US intelligence as one of the three core architects of the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. On March 10, 2024, Issa was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting an underground bunker in the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza.
