Biographical Record
Ma'ruf al-Rusafi was born in the al-Rusafa district of Baghdad and educated under the renowned scholar Mahmud Shukri al-Alusi. Teaching in Baghdad and Istanbul, he became a leading voice of the Nahda, using neoclassical poetic meter to address urgent social and political issues confronting the Arab world during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the British Mandate.
Rusafi passionately advocated for girls' education, the rights of the impoverished working class, and complete national independence. His resonant poems, taught in schools across the Arab world, denounced colonial exploitation and social stagnation, immortalizing him as the conscience of early 20th-century Iraq.
