Biographical Record
Martti Olavi Talvela was born on February 4, 1935, in Hiitola, Karelia, as the eighth of ten children in a farming family displaced by the Winter War. Standing 6 feet 8 inches tall with a resonant, thunderous bass voice, he initially worked as a primary schoolteacher before winning the 1960 Vaasa singing competition.
Talvela became an international operatic giant, performing at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Bayreuth Festival, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His titanic portrayal of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov remains the benchmark of modern operatic history. Serving as artistic director of the Savonlinna Opera Festival from 1972 to 1979, he transformed it into a world-class Mecca for opera lovers, all while running his organic sheep farm Inkilänhovi in Juva.
