Foremost Danish working-class author whose monumental epic novels Pelle the Conqueror and Ditte, Child of Man achieved worldwide acclaim for their compassionate realism.
Biographical Record
Martin Andersen was born on June 26, 1869, into grinding poverty in the Christianshavn slums of Copenhagen, moving to Nexø on the island of Bornholm as a boy, where he adopted the town's name. Apprenticed as a shoemaker and stonemason, he attended Askov Folk High School before turning to writing.
Nexø achieved international stature with his four-volume proletarian epic Pelle Erobreren (Pelle the Conqueror, 1906–1910), depicting a farm boy's struggle against rural servitude and his rise as a labor leader in Copenhagen (adapted into the 1987 Academy Award-winning film). In his five-volume cycle Ditte Menneskebarn (Ditte, Child of Man, 1917–1921), he created an enduring monument to working-class women's resilience.
