Biographical Record
Marina Ivanovna Tsvetaeva (1892–1941) was a Russian Silver Age poet celebrated for her fiery passion, innovative syntax, and relentless rhythmic drive. The daughter of Ivan Tsvetaev (founder of the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts) and a concert pianist mother, she published her first volume of poems at eighteen to high acclaim from Valery Bryusov and Max Voloshin.
Surviving the Russian Famine of 1919 in Moscow—during which her infant daughter Irina starved in a state orphanage—Tsvetaeva emigrated in 1922, living in poverty in Berlin, Prague, and Paris, where she composed masterpieces like Poem of the Mountain and Poem of the End. Returning to the USSR in 1939, her husband Sergei Efron was shot and her daughter Ariadna arrested. Evacuated to Yelabuga in Tatarstan following the German invasion, destitute and isolated, she ended her own life.
