Courageous Parisian woman who arrived in Quebec with husband Louis Hébert in 1617, serving as Canada's first European nurse, educator of Indigenous youth, and matriarch of French Canada.

Biographical Record

Marie Rollet arrived in the fledgling settlement of Quebec in 1617, facing isolation, extreme winters, and supply shortages. Alongside her husband, she cleared fields, tended crops, and prepared botanical remedies to heal the sick.

Following Hébert's death, she remarried Guillaume Hubou and continued her dedicated community service, taking Indigenous children into her home to instruct them in reading and French. She is commemorated alongside her husband in monuments overlooking Quebec's historic Upper Town.
