Archival Overview
Pioneering Danish physician and respiratory physiologist who co-developed the single-breath carbon monoxide diffusion technique and co-founded Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium.
Biographical Record
Birthe Marie Jørgensen was born on December 25, 1874, in Husby, western Jutland. Overcoming conservative gender barriers, she earned her medical degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1907 and became only the fourth Danish woman to earn a doctorate in medicine in 1914.
Working alongside her husband August Krogh, Marie perfected the single-breath carbon monoxide test for measuring pulmonary diffusion capacity across the alveolar membrane, an exam still utilized worldwide in pulmonology. After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, she persuaded August during their 1922 American tour to visit Toronto to obtain permission from Banting and Best to produce insulin, establishing Scandinavia's life-saving pharmaceutical industry.
