Mariano Azuela (1873–1952) served as a military field doctor in Pancho Villa's northern revolutionary army. Experiencing frontline chaos, peasant hopes, and brutal disillusionment, he wrote 'Los de abajo' in 1915 while taking refuge in El Paso, Texas.

The novel portrays Demetrio Macias and his ragged peasant band carried along by the blind hurricane of war. Azuela's gritty, unsentimental realism broke decisively with 19th-century romanticism, inaugurating modern Mexican national literature.
