Biographical Record
Marian Smoluchowski (1872–1917) studied in Vienna and conducted research in Paris, Glasgow, and Berlin before accepting chairs of physics in Lwow and Cracow. In 1906, he published his independent derivation of Brownian motion, providing decisive empirical proof of the physical reality of atoms.
His formulation of the Smoluchowski equation for diffusion under external force fields and his pioneering kinetic models of colloidal coagulation laid the foundations for modern chemical kinetics and soft matter physics.
