Archival Overview

Youngest of the three martyred Mirabal Sisters ('Las Mariposas'), a gifted surveyor student whose diary entries chronicling her underground resistance and brutal prison confinement immortalized her sweet and unyielding courage.

Biographical Record

Antonia María Teresa Mirabal was born on October 15, 1935, in Ojo de Agua. Inspired by her elder sister Minerva, María Teresa studied mathematics and surveying at the University of Santo Domingo, excelling in science.

Joining the underground 14th of June Movement as an arms and intelligence courier, she was arrested and brutally interrogated in the notorious La 40 prison in 1960. Murmuring defiance in her secret prison diary, she was murdered alongside Patria and Minerva on November 25, 1960, at age twenty-five. Her sacrifice galvanized the hemisphere against tyranny.
