Biographical Record
María Mendoza de Baratta was born in San Salvador on February 27, 1890. Trained as a concert pianist under European masters in San Salvador and Italy, Baratta achieved international acclaim before dedicating her musical life to indigenous ethnomusicology.
For thirty years, she traversed remote Pipil and Lenca villages recording indigenous melodies, flute (pito) rhythms, and slit-drum (teponahuaste) patterns. In 1951, she published her magnum opus Cuzcatlán típico, transcribing oral melodies into orchestral and piano suites and preserving indigenous musical memory for all posterity.
