"I was born proud and prickly, and whatever happens, I will walk up to death as an unbending woman."

Archival Overview

Preeminent novelist of the Canadian literary renaissance whose iconic Manawaka sequence, culminating in The Stone Angel and The Diviners, powerfully voiced female resilience and prairie heritage.

Biographical Record

Born in Neepawa, Manitoba (the fictional inspiration for Manawaka), Laurence lived in Somaliland and the Gold Coast (Ghana) with her civil engineer husband, publishing early translations and studies of Somali literature. Returning to Canada, she achieved immense acclaim with The Stone Angel (1964), voiced by the indomitable ninety-year-old Hagar Shipley.

She went on to write A Jest of God, The Fire-Dwellers, and her crowning achievement The Diviners (1974), winning two Governor General's Awards and becoming a Companion of the Order of Canada and chancellor of Trent University.
