Archival Overview
Iconic Flemish cartoonist and wildlife documentary filmmaker who created The Adventures of Nero and co., holding the Guinness World Record for single-handedly drawing over 200 full comic strip albums without assistants.
Biographical Record
Surviving imprisonment in the Nazi fortress of Breendonk during World War II, Sleen worked as an editorial political cartoonist for De Nieuwe Gids. In 1947, he launched the comic strip series centered around the eccentric, bald waffle-lover Nero.
For 45 years, Sleen wrote, drew, and inked every panel of Nero himself in Flemish daily newspapers, weaving absurd surrealism, political satire, and Belgian folklore. Created a knight by King Albert II, he also produced over thirty wildlife safari documentaries in Africa.
