Archival Overview
Influential federal minister whose 1974 Lalonde Report transformed global public health by shifting focus from clinical treatment to lifestyle and environmental determinants.
Biographical Record
Marc Lalonde was a brilliant Montreal lawyer who served as principal secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau before winning election to the House of Commons in 1972. Appointed Minister of National Health and Welfare, Lalonde authored the revolutionary 1974 white paper A New Perspective on the Health of Canadians (widely known worldwide as the Lalonde Report).
The report revolutionized modern epidemiology and health economics globally, establishing that human biology, environment, and lifestyle habits are far more consequential for population health than healthcare spending alone. Lalonde later served as Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources and Minister of Finance.
