Archival Overview
Iconic French fashion designer who served as artistic director of Christian Dior for three historic decades (1960–1989)—the longest tenure in the fashion house's history—creating the "Slim Look" and dressing Grace Kelly and Sophia Loren.
Biographical Record
Marc Roger Maurice Louis Bohan was born in Paris, the son of a millinery designer. After working for Robert Piguet, Edward Molyneux, and Jean Patou, Bohan was appointed head of Christian Dior in London by Christian Dior himself in 1958.
In 1960, when Yves Saint Laurent was called up for military service, Bohan was named artistic director of Christian Dior in Paris. In spring 1961, he unveiled his sensational debut haute couture collection, the "Slim Look"—a feminine, youthful silhouette featuring soft shoulders, supple waists, and clean architectural lines that delighted critics, with Gianfranco Ferré and Andy Warhol in awe. Bohan led Dior for nearly thirty years until 1989, launching Baby Dior, Christian Dior Monsieur, and dressing Princess Grace of Monaco, Empress Farah Pahlavi of Iran, Elizabeth Taylor, and Jackie Kennedy with enduring aristocratic poise.
