"Music is a harmony of proportions that moves the affections and lifts the soul to God."

Archival Overview

French Baroque master celebrated for his profound sacred choral polyphony, his collaboration with Molière on 'The Imaginary Invalid', and the iconic Eurovision anthem 'Te Deum'.

Biographical Record

Marc-Antoine Charpentier traveled to Rome in his youth to study under the great Giacomo Carissimi, absorbing Italian expressive chromaticism and polychoral drama. Barred from the royal opera due to Lully's monopolistic grip, Charpentier collaborated with Molière's theatrical troupe, composing the incidental music for Molière's final play, 'Le Malade imaginaire' (1673).

Charpentier served as music director to the Duchess of Guise and later Kapellmeister at the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. He composed sublime sacred works, including the beloved 'Messe de Minuit pour Noël' and his radiant 'Te Deum' (H. 146), whose triumphant martial trumpet prelude is world-famous today as the Eurovision theme.
