Diagnosed with tuberculosis at eighteen and told he had only months to live, Manuel Bandeira (1886–1968) channeled mortality into poems of crystalline simplicity, everyday humor, and wistful longing. His iconic poem 'Vou-me embora pra Pasargada' created a mythical city of freedom where imagination reigns.

Bandeira's poem 'Os Sapos' ('The Frogs') satirized pompous Parnassian poets during the 1922 Week of Modern Art, igniting modern Brazilian literature. He also translated Shakespeare, Goethe, and Garcia Lorca with unsurpassed lyrical precision.
