"True nobility is measured not by royal blood alone, but by the courage to unite and protect a divided empire."

Archival Overview

Emperor of the Mali Empire (reigned c. 1285–1300) who rose from royal court bondage to seize imperial authority during a period of dynastic chaos, expanding Mali's borders to their greatest extent prior to Mansa Musa.

Biographical Record

Sakura was initially an enslaved court retainer under founder Sundiata Keita. Following decades of succession crises and weak rulers, Sakura mounted a coup in 1285, assuming the imperial title of Mansa and immediately launching energetic campaigns to restore order.

Sakura conquered the Kingdom of Gao, bringing the Songhai realm under Mali control, and annexed the copper mining region of Takedda and the desert oasis of Walata. He secured the trans-Saharan trade routes, vastly enriching Mali's treasury. He was tragically slain by desert bandits while returning from his pilgrimage to Mecca.
