Biographical Record

Mangas Coloradas ('Red Sleeves') stood over six feet tall and was widely revered across the American Southwest for his extraordinary intellect, diplomatic skill, and combat command. He forged crucial kinship alliances with Cochise and other leaders to repel invaders from Apache lands.

During the Apache Wars, he led devastating ambushes against military invaders. In January 1863, he agreed to enter Fort McLane under a white flag of truce to negotiate peace, where he was treacherous captured, tortured, and murdered by Union soldiers.
