Biographical Record
Mammed Amin Rasulzade was born on January 31, 1884, in Novkhani near Baku. An active political journalist from his youth, Rasulzade played a leading role in the Iranian Constitutional Revolution of 1905 before founding the Musavat party in Baku in 1911.
On May 28, 1918, Rasulzade proclaimed the independence of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR), serving as Chairman of the National Council. The ADR established universal suffrage (including women's right to vote, ahead of most Western nations), a multiparty parliament, and Baku State University. Following the Red Army invasion in 1920, Rasulzade escaped into lifelong political exile, dying in Ankara in 1955.
