Biographical Record
Malika Gaïd (1933–1957) worked as a trained midwife and surgical nurse in Lafayette (Bougaâ). In 1955, recruited by Colonel Amirouche, she secretly supplied medicines, surgical instruments, and medical intelligence to the National Liberation Army before heading into the rugged maquis.
Gaïd served as chief nurse of Wilaya III, setting up mobile underground surgical clinics in caves and forests under constant French napalm strikes. In June 1957, during a massive French encirclement of her cave clinic near M'Chedallah, she picked up an assault rifle to cover the evacuation of wounded soldiers, dying heroically under enemy fire at age twenty-three.
