Malik authored 'Al-Muwatta' ('The Approved Path'), harmonizing prophetic Hadith with the living communal practice of the people of Medina ('Amal Ahl al-Madinah). Renowned for scrupulous piety, he famously refused Caliph Harun al-Rashid's request to impose the Muwatta as the sole law of the empire, respecting legitimate legal pluralism.
