Archival Overview

Founder of the Holkar Dynasty of Indore and supreme Maratha cavalry general who rose from a shepherd family to command imperial campaigns across northern India and Malwa.

Biographical Record

Born into a humble Dhangar (shepherd) family, Malhar Rao (1693–1766) joined Peshwa Baji Rao I's cavalry, rapidly distinguishing himself by his bravery. In 1731, Peshwa Baji Rao granted him control of Malwa, where he established the ruling house of Indore.

Malhar Rao commanded Maratha armies from Delhi to the Punjab, playing a pivotal role in expanding Maratha authority to Attock in 1758. Following the catastrophic defeat at Panipat in 1761, he safeguarded the retreating Maratha forces and supported his visionary daughter-in-law Ahilyabai Holkar in governing the state.
