Malek Bennabi

Malek Bennabi (1905–1973) was born in Constantine and studied electrical engineering in Paris while immersing himself in sociological, historical, and Islamic philosophy. Recognizing that political slogans were insufficient for genuine independence, Bennabi analyzed the structural causes of the decline of Islamic civilization following the collapse of the Almohad Empire.

In his 1948 masterwork The Conditions of Renaissance (Les Conditions de la Renaissance), Bennabi coined the revolutionary concept of 'colonizability'—the psychological and social vulnerability of a defeated society that invites foreign colonization. He posited that genuine civilizational rebirth requires the harmonic synthesis of three elemental factors: Man, Soil, and Time, animated by a spiritual idea.
