Archival Overview

Barbadian cricketer for the West Indies, widely acknowledged as the most devastatingly complete and fearsome fast bowler of modern cricket.

Biographical Record

Malcolm Denzil Marshall (1958–1999) was the linchpin of the legendary West Indies fast bowling battery that dominated world cricket in the 1980s. Though relatively short for an elite quick at 5 feet 11 inches, Marshall possessed ferocious skiddy pace, lethal bouncers, and supreme tactical mastery.

Taking 376 Test wickets at an astonishing average of 20.94, Marshall was also revered for his sheer warrior spirit. At Headingley in 1984, he batted with a fractured thumb wrapped in plaster to help Larry Gomes score a century, then took 7 for 53 with one hand to crush England.
