Archival Overview
Tragic young genius of Belarusian lyric poetry who mastered European poetic forms (sonnets, triolets) in his immortal 1913 collection 'Vyenok' before dying of tuberculosis at age twenty-five.
Biographical Record
Maksim Bahdanovic was born on December 9, 1891, in Minsk, the son of distinguished ethnographer Adam Bahdanovic. Though raised primarily in Nizhny Novgorod and Yaroslavl due to his mother's death, Bahdanovic independently studied Old Belarusian chronicles and devoted his dazzling poetic gift entirely to his ancestral mother tongue.
His only published book of verse, Vyenok (The Wreath, 1913), demonstrated that the Belarusian language possessed the elegance to excel in classical French and Italian verse forms. His iconic patriotic poem Pahonia ('The Chase') captured the fiery medieval cavalry emblem of Belarus. Succumbing to tuberculosis in Yalta at age 25, his lyrical legacy remains immortal.
