Biographical Record
Born to a Libyan family in Haifa, Mahmud Sulayman al-Maghribi studied petroleum law in the United States before working for Esso in Libya, leading strikes for workers' rights under the monarchy that resulted in his imprisonment.
Appointed Prime Minister in September 1969, he spearheaded the tough renegotiation of oil concessions with foreign multinational conglomerates, laying the groundwork for Libyan nationalization of oil resources. Resigning over authoritarian drift, he served as ambassador in London before choosing principled political exile.
