Biographical Record
Mahmud ibn Zarqun was dispatched by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur in 1591 to succeed Judar Pasha and enforce direct imperial administrative control over Timbuktu, Gao, and Djenné. A stern disciplinarian, Ibn Zarqun fortified Saadian garrisons and secured trans-Saharan trade routes.
He campaigned tirelessly across the Sahel to suppress remaining Songhai resistance under Askia Nuh until he was ambushed and killed by archers in the rugged Hombori region in March 1595.
