Archival Overview
Satirical filmmaker and screenwriter from Boufarik whose razor-sharp comedies like 'Prends 10 000 balles et casse-toi' and 'De Hollywood à Tamanrasset' skewered social hypocrisy.
Biographical Record
Mahmoud Zemmouri was born in Boufarik in the fertile Mitidja plain. He studied cinema at the IDHEC and worked as assistant director to master filmmaker Ali Ghalem before launching his own directing career with the stinging comedy 'Prends 10 000 balles et casse-toi' (1981), satirizing French racist anti-immigrant policies.
His 1990 satirical triumph 'De Hollywood à Tamanrasset' mocked the absurd invasion of American satellite television into conservative Algerian society. With humor, tenderness, and courageous social critique, Zemmouri held up an affectionate yet uncompromising mirror to Algerian and diaspora society.
