Pioneering sculptor universally celebrated as the father of modern Egyptian sculpture, who revitalized monumental stone carving after a two-thousand-year hiatus, immortalized by his monumental statue 'Nahdat Misr' (Egypt's Renaissance).
Biographical Record
First student admitted to Cairo's School of Fine Arts upon its founding in 1908, Mokhtar won a scholarship to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, studying under master sculptor Jules Coutan. His work blended ancient Pharaonic grandeur with French classical elegance.
In 1920, inspired by the 1919 Revolution, he exhibited the model for Nahdat Misr in Paris, winning a gold medal. Carved from monumental rose Aswan granite and unveiled in Cairo in 1928, the statue depicting a rising Sphinx and a proud peasant woman stands as an enduring emblem of the modern nation.
