Archival Overview
Visionary Sudanese Islamic thinker, civil engineer, and leader of the Republican Brothers whose revolutionary book The Second Message of Islam advocated universal human rights, gender equality, and religious tolerance.
Biographical Record
A civil engineer graduated from Gordon Memorial College, Mahmoud Mohamed Taha was an anti-colonial leader imprisoned by the British in the 1940s. Following a period of intense spiritual retreat, he founded the Republican Party and formulated his theological thesis The Second Message of Islam.
He argued that the universal spiritual and human rights principles of the Meccan revelations supersede the historical legal ordinances of Medina. When President Jaafar Nimeiry imposed draconian September Sharia laws in 1983, Taha distributed pamphlets denouncing religious coercion, leading to his public hanging in Khartoum in 1985.
