Biographical Record
Born in the historic Darb al-Ahmar district of Cairo, Mahmoud El-Meliguy was discovered by theatrical pioneer Fatima Rushdi in the 1930s. Over a magnificent five-decade career spanning more than 500 films, he created the archetypal multifaceted cinematic villain before revealing astonishing dramatic humanity.
His collaboration with director Youssef Chahine produced masterpieces including Al-Ard (The Land, 1969), where his final scene—dragged by horses through the mud while clutching his cotton crop—remains one of the most powerful cinematic metaphors of resistance ever filmed. He died peacefully on a movie set while filming his final scene.
