Archival Overview
Pioneering medical doctor from the Faculty of Medicine in Paris who co-founded and served as first president of the Neo-Destour Party alongside Bourguiba in 1934, later serving as Minister of Health.
Biographical Record
Graduating in medicine from Paris in 1926, Dr. Mahmoud El Materi returned to Tunis to open an open-door clinic in the popular Bab Souika quarter, treating impoverished workers and striking trade unionists for free. In March 1934 at Ksar Hellal, he was elected the first president of the newly formed Neo-Destour Party.
Arrested and exiled to southern desert camps by colonial authorities for organizing the mass demonstrations of April 1938, his ethical integrity made him a trusted statesman. Following independence, he built regional hospitals and tuberculosis dispensaries as Minister of Health.
