Biographical Record
Head of psychiatry at the Beni Messous hospital in Algiers and professor of medicine, Dr. Mahfoud Boucebci broke societal taboos by addressing child abuse, mental disabilities, and the rights of single mothers and born-out-of-wedlock children in Algeria.
He served as Vice President of the Algerian League for Human Rights and the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. On June 15, 1993, he was brutally stabbed to death by religious extremists at the entrance of his clinic, a foundational martyr of modern Algerian medicine.
