Veteran Carthaginian naval officer who defended the sealanes between Cape Bon and western Sicily during the First Punic War, uncle to Hannibal's cavalry commander Maharbal.

Biographical Record

Maharbal the Elder was an experienced sea captain in the service of the Carthaginian navy. During the prolonged First Punic War, he commanded squadrons of quinqueremes defending the supply convoys departing from Utica and Carthage to the beleaguered garrisons of Lilybaeum and Drepana.

His tactical seamanship kept open the maritime lifeline of Carthage through decades of naval engagements, passing on his equestrian and tactical knowledge to the younger generation of Barcid officers.
