Archival Overview

Queen regent of the Maratha Empire who organized and led the relentless resistance that successfully repelled Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb's twenty-five-year invasion of the Deccan.

Biographical Record

Tarabai was the daughter of Maratha commander-in-chief Hambirao Mohite and married Rajaram I, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji. Following her husband's death in 1700, she proclaimed her infant son Chhatrapati and assumed supreme military and civil control of the Maratha state.

Tarabai personally rode on horseback, coordinated cavalry strikes across Maharashtra, and took the fight directly into Mughal territories like Malwa and Gujarat. Her unwavering leadership drained the Mughal treasury and broke Aurangzeb's imperial ambitions in the Deccan.
