Archival Overview

Thirteenth king of Mewar celebrated as the supreme hero of Rajput resistance, who refused to submit to Mughal Emperor Akbar and fought the epic Battle of Haldighati in 1576 with his loyal horse Chetak.

Biographical Record

While other Rajput rulers married their daughters into the Mughal court for prestige and wealth, Maharana Pratap (1540–1597) swore to sleep on straw mats, eat from leaf plates, and live in the Aravalli mountains until Mewar was liberated. In June 1576, he confronted Akbar's imperial army at the narrow mountain pass of Haldighati.

Riding his fearless war horse Chetak, Pratap attacked the Mughal center, wounding Man Singh I. Though forced to retreat after Chetak was mortally wounded, Pratap waged relentless guerrilla warfare from mountain hideouts. Aided by merchant Bhama Shah's wealth, Pratap recaptured nearly all of Mewar before his death.
