Archival Overview
Master Carthaginian agricultural scientist whose 28-volume farming encyclopedia was so revered that the Roman Senate ordered it translated into Latin as the sole Carthaginian work preserved after the destruction of 146 BCE.
Biographical Record
Mago was a high-ranking Carthaginian nobleman whose comprehensive treatise on estate management, viticulture, olive cultivation, veterinary science, and irrigation synthesized centuries of Punic agricultural expertise across the fertile Medjerda valley.
When Rome razed Carthage in 146 BCE, Roman senators commanded that while other Punic libraries were gifted to Numidian princes, Mago's twenty-eight books be officially translated into Latin by Decimus Silanus, becoming the authoritative textbook of Roman agronomists Varro and Columella.
