Biographical Record

Madhvacharya (c. 1238–1317), also known as Purna Prajna, was a champion wrestler and intellectual titan who challenged the Advaita non-dualist hegemony. In thirty-seven philosophical treatises (Sarvamoola Granthas), Madhva proved that reality is intrinsically plural and dualistic.

Madhva formulated the 'Pancha-Bheda' (Five Eternal Distinctions): the difference between God and soul, God and matter, soul and soul, soul and matter, and matter and matter. Teaching that Vishnu is the supreme, independent sovereign reality (Svatantra) and that all souls are dependent (Paratantra), Madhva founded the Ashta Mathas of Udupi.
