Archival Overview

Thirteenth-century philosopher-reformer who founded the Dvaita (Dualism) school of Vedanta. Formulated the five eternal distinctions (Pancha Bheda), asserting the absolute independent reality of God and the eternal distinction of souls.

Biographical Record

Born near maritime Udupi in Karnataka, Madhva was renowned for prodigious physical strength, debate prowess, and mastery of Vedic scriptures. He established the celebrated Sri Krishna Temple at Udupi after miraculously salvaging a sacred statue from a shipwrecked vessel coated in ballast clay.

He authored thirty-seven Sanskrit treatises (Sarvamula Grantha), vigorously refuting monism and asserting that Lord Vishnu is the sovereign, independent reality (Svatantra) while all matter and souls are eternally dependent (Paratantra), establishing the eight Udupi monastic seats.
