Ruler of Gwalior and supreme Maratha statesman who resurrected Maratha supremacy after the Third Battle of Panipat, trained modern European-style infantry under Benoit de Boigne, and controlled Delhi.
Biographical Record
Wounded and left permanently lame at the disastrous Third Battle of Panipat in 1761, Mahadji Shinde (1730–1794) succeeded as Maharaja of Gwalior. Recognizing that traditional light cavalry was obsolete against European-trained infantry, he hired French mercenary General Benoit de Boigne to raise modern battalions equipped with flintlocks and mobile artillery.
In 1771, Mahadji captured Delhi and restored blinded Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II to the Peacock Throne, who named Mahadji 'Vakil-i-Mutlaq' (Regent Plenipotentiary of the Empire). He decisively defeated the British East India Company at the Battle of Wadgaon in 1779, dominating northern India.
