Madhava of Sangamagrama (c. 1340–1425 CE) lived in the lush coastal kingdom of Kerala in southern India, founding the Kerala School of Astronomy and Mathematics that flourished for over two centuries. He made one of the greatest leaps in the history of mathematics: the transition from finite algorithmic algebra to the infinite analysis of mathematical calculus.
Madhava discovered the infinite series expansions for $sin x$, $cos x$, and $arctan x$ (rediscovered in Europe by Gregory and Leibniz in the late 17th century), utilizing term-by-term integration. He applied his series to compute $pi$ to 11 decimal places (3.14159265359), providing error correction terms that anticipated modern numerical analysis.
