"The guembri does not strike the ear; it strikes the spirit, awakening the forgotten memory of our ancestors across the desert."

Archival Overview

Revered master (Maâlem) of Moroccan Gnawa music from Essaouira whose transcendent guembri playing and global collaborations with Pharoah Sanders introduced African-Moroccan spiritual trance to the world.

Biographical Record

Mahmoud Guinea was born into an illustrious ancestral Gnawa family in Essaouira, with roots tracing back to Mali. He was initiated into the sacred rituals of the Lila trance ceremonies by his father Maâlem Boubker Guinea from early childhood, mastering the three-stringed bass lute (guembri/hajhouj).

Guinea became the undisputed global ambassador of Gnawa trance music, headlining the world-famous Essaouira Gnaoua and World Music Festival. His landmark 1994 collaboration with American jazz titan Pharoah Sanders, 'The Trance of Seven Colors', is acclaimed as one of the greatest cross-cultural musical summits in history.
