Born into the traditional Devadasi musical community in Madurai, Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi (1916–2004) recorded her first album at age ten. Her peerless pitch perfection (shruti shuddhi), spiritual radiance, and diction in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada enchanted millions.
Her morning rendition of 'Venkateswara Suprabhatam' is broadcast daily across millions of Indian households. In October 1966, she delivered a historic concert at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, dedicating all royalties from recordings to charitable foundations.
