Biographical Record
Maqbool Fida Husain (1915–2011) began his career painting massive Bollywood movie billboards in Bombay for a few annas a day. In 1947, alongside Souza and Raza, he co-founded the Progressive Artists' Group, liberating modern Indian art from British colonial academicism.
Husain became a global cultural icon, known for walking barefoot and using sweeping cubist brushstrokes to paint horses, rural laborers, and epic cycles of the Mahabharata and Ramayana. Targeted by right-wing fundamentalists in his twilight years, he spent his final years in self-imposed exile in Dubai and London.
