Archival Overview
Revered Caribou Inuit camp leader whose minimalist, radiating colored pencil drawings captured the ancient migration paths and hunting circles of the Barren Grounds.
Biographical Record
Luke Anguhadluq was a respected camp leader (ihumatak) of the Utkuhikhalingmiut Inuit of the lower Back River in Nunavut. Spending over seventy years as an independent nomadic hunter following the great Beverly and Qamanirjuaq caribou herds, Anguhadluq relocated to Baker Lake in the late 1960s.
Taking up colored pencil and printmaking in his seventies, Anguhadluq created a completely original visual geometry: aerial circular perspectives showing concentric rings of hunters, drum dancers, and muskoxen radiating outward from a central campfire. His masterpieces hang in the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada.
